Watercolour painting is a classic method using a medium in which pigment is suspended in a water-based solution traditionally and predominantly painted onto specialty watercolour paper. Watercolour paints, also known as ‘aquarelle’, are usually translucent, although can be made opaque with the addition of zinc oxide, also known as Chinese white. Watercolours produce a soft and luminous effect and have a layered, transparent appearance
Watercolour painting originated in some form in ancient times of cave painting and manuscript illustration. The art form of watercolour painting we know today began to develop during the 1400’s and has continued through to today to be a very popular medium.
