Realism, also referred to as naturalism, was produced in several historical periods but was determined an artistic movement in the mid 1800’s, evolving in France. Realism was defined historically by everyday life subjects painted naturalistically however the style also commonly refers to artwork painted in a realistic, precise representation of the subject.
The realism art movement rejected romanticism, which had subjugated French literature and art since the early 19th century. Realism portrays the subject without un-naturalistic, implausible, mystical or exotic elements.
It is important to note that realism in art is defined by the choice and treatment of the subject matter, depicting the genuine subject matter in its’ natural state, rather than appropriating it for visual appearance. Realism does not need to portray the subject in perfect life-like detail.
