Direct from the artist impressionist paintings for sale
Impressionism originated in the late 19th century in France with the artworks of Claude Monet, who pioneered the movement throughout his life. The Impressionism movement then extended throughout Europe and on to the United States.
Impressionism depicts the subject with an emphasis on accurate light values and often vibrant colour and contrast, made with short, unblended brush strokes which are visible to the viewer.
It does not aim to portray the subject in a real sense, rather a transitory ‘glance’ giving the impression of the scene or other subject. This was a radical concept when it emerged and was ridiculed by critics however, today Impressionism is an extremely popular and regarded style of art.
